There are over 100 bill splitting apps on the App Store. Most are clones of each other — a basic calculator with a tip slider and an equal-split button. That is not very helpful when one person ordered a salad and the other ordered steak and two cocktails.

So we did something most comparison articles do not: we installed the top contenders and tested each one with the same real receipt. We scanned it, tried to assign items, checked the totals, and attempted to share the results. The differences were revealing.

Here are six apps worth knowing about, depending on how you split.

Disclosure: ReceiptSplit is our app. We have tried to be honest about what each app does well and where it falls short. If Splitwise or Splid is a better fit for how you split, we would rather you use the right tool than the wrong one. We tested every app in this comparison firsthand.

What to Look For in a Bill Splitting App

Before comparing specific apps, here are the criteria that actually matter when choosing a bill splitter. Not every app needs all of these, but knowing what you care about will save you from downloading three apps before finding the right one.

Receipt scanning accuracy. Some apps use AI to read receipt photos and extract individual items, prices, tax, and tip. Others rely on basic OCR or skip scanning entirely. In our testing, accuracy varied wildly — some apps showed totals nearly 4x the actual receipt amount. If you split at restaurants regularly, good scanning saves a lot of manual entry.

Item assignment. Equal splitting is easy — you can do that with a calculator. The real value of a bill splitting app is letting you assign specific items to specific people, so everyone pays for what they actually ordered.

Tip and tax handling. This is where most apps fall short. The fair way to split tip and tax is proportionally — if you ordered 60% of the food, you should pay 60% of the tip and tax. Many apps only do equal splits of these amounts, or skip them entirely. If you just need to calculate a tip quickly, our free tip calculator handles pre-tax tipping, rounding, and splitting.

Payment request integration. After splitting, you need to collect money. Apps that generate payment links (Venmo, PayPal, Cash App) make this step frictionless instead of requiring everyone to download the same app or visit a web link.

Sharing flexibility. Can you send split results to anyone via text or email? Or does the recipient need to install the app? This matters more than most people realize — not everyone wants to download a new app just to see what they owe.

Privacy. Bill splitting apps handle financial data, and some collect far more personal information than you would expect. We checked every app's App Store privacy label to see what data they collect and whether it is linked to your identity.

Price. Bill splitting should not cost more than the tip. Some apps are completely free, others charge subscriptions, and a few lock basic features behind paywalls. We note the pricing model for each app below.

1. ReceiptSplit — Best for Fair, Item-by-Item Splits

Best for: Restaurant dinners where fairness matters

ReceiptSplit is built around one idea: everyone should pay for exactly what they ordered, including their fair share of tip and tax. You scan a receipt with your iPhone camera, the AI extracts every line item, and then you assign items to people. Tip and tax are split proportionally based on what each person ordered, not divided equally. No account required — you can try the full-featured version with 10 AI scans and no other limitations. (This is our app — see disclosure above.)

What We Found

When we scanned our test receipt, ReceiptSplit correctly identified all line items, prices, and the total. The receipt area was auto-detected from the camera feed, so there was no need to manually crop. Item assignment offers two modes: split by person (choosing items for each person) or split by item (choosing people for each item) — the second approach feels more natural when you are looking at the receipt and going through items one by one. The whole process from scan to share took under a minute.

Strengths

  • Accurate AI scanning. In our testing, it was the most accurate scanner of the group — totals matched the real receipt even in the free tier.
  • Receipt area auto-detection. The camera automatically finds the receipt boundaries. No manual cropping needed. Only ReceiptSplit and splyt offer this among the apps we tested.
  • Two assignment modes. Split by person (choose items for each person) or by item (choose people for each item). The by-item mode is unique and more natural when going through the receipt line by line. Most competitors only offer one approach.
  • Proportional tip and tax. If your items make up 40% of the subtotal, you pay 40% of the tip and tax. No other app in this roundup does this correctly.
  • 8 payment methods. Supports Venmo, PayPal, Cash App, Revolut, Apple Pay, BLIK, bank transfer, and cash. Payment requests for Venmo, PayPal, and Cash App include links pre-filled with the exact amount — the most of any app here.
  • Share with anyone. Send split results via SMS, email, or any messaging app — with PDF and images. Recipients do not need to install anything.
  • 150+ currencies auto-detected. The app recognizes the currency from the receipt automatically — no manual selection needed.
  • Full debt control. Track who has paid and who still owes, with weekly balance reminders and saved groups. Search receipts by merchant or participant, and filter by payment status.
  • Works offline. AI scanning requires internet, but manual entry and all splitting features work offline.
  • No account required. Open the app and start scanning. No signup, no email address, no social login.
  • Full iPad experience. Not just a stretched iPhone app — the full splitting workflow is optimized for iPad.
  • Best privacy. The developer collects no user data at all, according to the App Store privacy label.

Limitations

  • iOS and iPadOS only. No Android app yet. If your group is mixed, the person with the iPhone needs to do the scanning.
  • AI scanning requires internet. The offline fallback is manual entry, which is slower.
  • Two languages. English and Polish only. No Spanish, French, or other major languages yet.
  • Newer app. Smaller community and fewer reviews compared to established apps like Splitwise.

Price

Free with 10 AI scans included — no other limitations in the free tier (all features unlocked). Pro unlocks unlimited scanning at $9.99/month or $99.99/year. Manual entry and all splitting features are always free.

2. SplitIt — Best for Venmo Users

Best for: Quick splits with Venmo payment requests

SplitIt: Group Bill Splitter is a newer iOS app with Venmo integration and receipt scanning. It has solid ratings (4.8 stars, 680 ratings) and supports features like group tracking, fees, discounts, tip, and tax. It also integrates with your contacts so it remembers who you go out with, and includes an error-checking feature that flags when scanned items do not match the subtotal. On paper, it checks a lot of boxes.

What We Found

When we scanned our test receipt, the results were disappointing. The free version showed a total nearly 2x the actual receipt price. The interface felt unclear in places — we could not find an equal split option, and tax was not properly distributed across items. There is no receipt area detection, so you need to manually position the camera. Currency changes require the Pro upgrade, and there is no debt tracking for following up on who has paid. Sharing works via a web link, which means recipients effectively need to visit a portal or download the app to see their share.

Strengths

  • Venmo integration. Send payment requests directly through the app.
  • Receipt scanning included. AI-based scanning in both free and paid tiers.
  • Fees, discounts, tip, and tax. Supports adding various charges on top of the base bill.
  • Group tracking. Save groups for repeated splits.
  • Contact integration. Remembers who you go out with, so you do not retype names.
  • Error checking. Flags when scanned items do not match the subtotal.
  • Item duplication. Quickly duplicate items when multiple people ordered the same thing.

Limitations

  • Inaccurate scanning. In our testing, the scanned total was nearly double the actual receipt price.
  • No receipt area detection. You have to position the receipt carefully in the camera frame.
  • No equal split option. We could not find a way to simply split equally.
  • Tax handling issues. Tax was not properly added or distributed in our test.
  • Currency change requires Pro. Free version is locked to one currency.
  • No debt tracking. No way to mark who has paid after sharing.
  • Sharing requires web link. Recipients need to open a link or download the app, adding friction.
  • iOS only. English only. No Android, no iPad optimization.
  • No offline mode. Requires internet to function.
  • Privacy. Collects contact info, phone number, contacts, and user ID linked to your identity.

Price

Free with limits. Unlimited plan at $4.99 one-time or $39.99/year.

3. Fairsplit: Split the Bill — Best Budget Option

Best for: Occasional splits on a tight budget

Fairsplit: Split the Bill is available on iOS, iPadOS, and macOS (Apple Silicon). It offers multiple splitting methods — even split, by percentage, and by participation ratio — collects no user data, and has a dark mode. At $2.99 for the full version, it is the cheapest paid option in this roundup. The free tier is limited to 3 receipts and 4 persons.

One unusual feature: Fairsplit uses built-in iOS text recognition for its OCR, which means scanning works entirely offline without sending your receipt to any server. Most other apps with scanning need an internet connection. It is also the second smallest app at just 13.7 MB.

What We Found

Scanning accuracy was the biggest issue. When we scanned our test receipt, Fairsplit showed a total nearly 4x the actual price — the offline OCR simply does not match AI-based scanning for accuracy. Item assignment exists, but it is cumbersome — each item opens a separate dialog with a person list, which slows things down significantly with larger bills. We could find an equal split option, which is a plus. It also supports quantitative splitting (for example, splitting a round of drinks by count), which is a nice touch. However, there is no receipt area detection, no debt tracking or follow-up features, and we could not find any support for tip or tax despite the App Store listing mentioning it. The full version generates shareable reports, but they include embedded App Store links for the app itself.

Strengths

  • Cheapest paid option. $2.99 one-time for the full version — no subscription. The cheapest paid tier of any app in this comparison.
  • Multiple splitting methods. Equal split, by percentage, by participation ratio, and per-item assignment.
  • Quantitative splitting. Split items by count — useful for splitting a round of drinks.
  • Offline OCR. Scanning uses built-in iOS tools and works without internet — unusual among receipt scanners.
  • No data collected. Best privacy alongside ReceiptSplit — the developer collects zero data.
  • Multi-platform. Works on iOS, iPadOS, and macOS (Apple Silicon Macs).
  • Tiny app size. Just 13.7 MB — second smallest of all apps compared.
  • Dark mode support.

Limitations

  • Very inaccurate scanning. Nearly 4x the actual receipt total in our test. Offline OCR cannot compete with AI parsing.
  • No receipt area detection. Manual camera positioning required.
  • Tedious item assignment. Each item opens a new dialog, making large bills slow to split.
  • No tip or tax support. We could not find a way to add or split tip and tax despite it being advertised.
  • No debt tracking. No way to follow up on payments.
  • Free tier very limited. Only 3 receipts and 4 persons before you need to pay.
  • Reports include app promotion. Shared reports contain App Store links.
  • Two languages only. English and Russian.
  • Small user base. Only 24 ratings.

Price

Free (limited to 3 receipts, 4 persons). Full version $2.99 one-time.

4. splyt — Best for Cross-Platform Groups

Best for: Groups with mixed iPhone and Android users

splyt: tab & bill splitter claims over 100K users and works on iOS, Android, macOS, and even Apple Vision Pro — the widest platform support of any receipt-scanning app in this roundup. It supports Venmo, Cash App, and payment notifications. Among the apps we tested, splyt was the only one with receipt area detection besides ReceiptSplit. It supports fees, discounts, tip, and tax.

One standout feature: friends can participate in a split without downloading the app. They join via a QR code or invite link, which lowers the barrier significantly compared to apps that require everyone to install the same software. splyt also sends automatic payment reminders via text and supports live editing of splits, so changes update in real time for everyone.

What We Found

The receipt area detection is a nice touch. However, the scanning accuracy was off. When we scanned our test receipt (actual total: $118.46), splyt showed $146.55 — it included already-counted tax in the total, inflating the amount. The app does not recognize currency automatically, so you need to set it manually. The UI felt cluttered and hard to navigate. On the sharing front, while friends can join via QR code without the app, the experience is still oriented around the splyt ecosystem rather than a simple text or email breakdown.

Strengths

  • Receipt area detection. Automatically finds the receipt in the camera frame.
  • Widest platform support. iOS, Android, macOS, and Apple Vision Pro — covers virtually every device.
  • Friends do not need the app. Participants can join via QR code or invite link without downloading anything — a unique feature.
  • Venmo and Cash App. Payment integrations for popular US services.
  • Automatic payment reminders. Sends text reminders to people who have not paid.
  • Live editing. Changes to splits update in real time for all participants.
  • Fees, discounts, tip, and tax. Supports various bill adjustments.

Limitations

  • Inaccurate scanning. Showed $146.55 instead of $118.46 in our test — double-counted tax.
  • Does not detect currency. You need to set it manually.
  • Cluttered UI. Navigation felt confusing in places.
  • Largest app. At 128.9 MB, it is nearly 10x the size of Splid or Fairsplit.
  • Most expensive monthly option. $4.99/month is the highest recurring cost of any app here.
  • Privacy concerns. Collects location data, contact info, photos, payment info, and user IDs. Uses data for advertising and analytics.
  • English only.
  • No offline mode. Requires internet to function.

Price

Free with limits. Plus plan at $4.99/month, $39.99/year, or $99.99 lifetime.

5. Splitwise — The Big Name, But Is It the Best?

Most popular, but not built for receipt splitting

Splitwise is the most downloaded expense sharing app with 23K+ ratings. It is primarily an expense tracker for ongoing group expenses — think roommates logging rent and utilities over months. It was not originally built for scanning and splitting individual receipts, and that shows.

What We Found

Splitwise is the only app in this comparison that requires creating an account before you can do anything. To access receipt scanning, you need to choose and start a paid plan upfront — even the 7-day free trial requires committing to a subscription first. Every other app in this list lets you scan a receipt immediately.

Once we got to scanning, results were mixed. On our test receipt it missed some product quantities and did not recognize discounts — though AI scanning accuracy can vary between receipts and is a challenge for all apps. Item assignment is only available in one direction — you pick a person and then choose their items. There is no option to go the other way (pick an item, assign people), which is slower with large groups.

The sharing model is a significant limitation. When you share a split with someone who does not have Splitwise, they receive an email inviting them to download the app and create an account — not a message with the actual breakdown of what they owe. Compare this to ReceiptSplit, which sends a plain SMS or email with the itemized amounts and payment links. On the positive side, inline items editing works well once you are inside the app.

Where Splitwise is best known is long-term group expense tracking. The debt simplification algorithm is smart, recurring expenses save time for rent and utilities, and cross-platform support (iOS, Android, web) means everyone can participate. It supports 12 languages. But for splitting a single restaurant bill — which is what most people search for — it is overbuilt and underperforms compared to dedicated receipt splitters. Its 3.8-star rating (the lowest of all six apps) and mixed user reviews about UX complexity reflect this tension between being an everything-tool and doing any one thing simply.

Strengths

  • Debt simplification. If A owes B $20 and B owes C $20, Splitwise collapses that into A paying C directly. Useful for complex group dynamics.
  • Cross-platform. iOS, Android, and web — the widest platform support of any app here.
  • 12 languages. The most multilingual app in this comparison.
  • Recurring expenses. Automates repeating charges like rent and utilities.
  • Inline item editing. Edit scanned items directly in place, which is convenient.
  • Offline mode with cloud sync.

Limitations

  • Account required. The only app in this comparison that requires creating an account to use.
  • Must start paid plan for scanning. You need to choose and start a paid plan upfront to access receipt scanning — even the 7-day free trial requires committing to a plan first.
  • Scanning can be hit-or-miss. In our testing it missed some quantities and discounts, though AI scanning accuracy varies across all apps.
  • Friends must download the app. Sharing a split sends an email inviting the recipient to download Splitwise — not a message with the actual debt breakdown. Your friends need accounts to see what they owe.
  • Item assignment by person only. You can only assign items by selecting a person and then choosing their items. No option to assign by item (tap an item, choose who had it), which is less intuitive for large groups.
  • No proportional tip or tax. Splits tip and tax equally or by exact amounts, not based on what each person ordered.
  • Overkill for one-time splits. The group-based workflow adds unnecessary steps when you just want to split tonight's dinner.
  • Daily submission caps. The free tier limits how many expenses you can add per day.
  • Mixed user reviews on UX. At 3.8 stars (23K ratings), it is the lowest-rated app in this comparison. Reviews mention complexity and iPad/split-screen issues.
  • Payment integrations limited by region. Venmo and PayPal only work in the US; Paytm only in India.

Price

Free for basic expense tracking. Pro is $4.99/month or $39.99/year, which adds receipt scanning, itemization, currency conversion, charts, and no ads.

6. Splid — Best Completely Free Option

Best for: Groups who want a free expense tracker with no strings attached

Splid is the highest-rated app in this entire comparison — 4.9 stars with 3,503 ratings. It is a straightforward group expense tracker available on iOS, iPadOS, Apple Vision Pro, and Android. No signup is required, and it can export to PDF and Excel. The base app is completely free with no limits.

What We Found

Splid is an honest, functional expense tracker — but it is purely manual. There is no receipt scanning at all. You type in amounts and assign them to people. There is no support for tips, tax, or fees — it is designed for tracking who paid what, not for splitting a single receipt item by item. It does include optimized payment settlements that minimize the number of transactions needed (similar to Splitwise's debt simplification), expense categorization, and support for multiple payees per expense. It is also tiny at just 11.1 MB — the smallest app in this roundup. The UI is utilitarian and feels dated compared to newer apps. Sharing is done via a link, which works but is not as immediate as a text message with the breakdown. If you need a free way to track group expenses over time and do not care about receipt scanning, Splid is a solid choice. For splitting a restaurant bill, it is the wrong tool.

Strengths

  • Completely free. No limits, no subscription, no premium tier. This is rare. (Splid Plus at $3.99 one-time is purely optional for extra features.)
  • Highest rated. 4.9 stars from 3,503 ratings — the best rating of any app in this comparison.
  • Smallest app. Just 11.1 MB. Takes almost no storage space.
  • Optimized settlements. Minimizes the number of payments needed, similar to Splitwise's debt simplification.
  • 150+ currencies. Handles international groups with automatic conversion.
  • Offline mode. Works without internet.
  • No signup required. Start using it immediately.
  • Export to PDF and Excel. Useful for record-keeping.
  • Cross-platform. iOS, iPadOS, Apple Vision Pro, and Android.
  • 5 languages. English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish.
  • Expense categorization. Organize expenses by type.
  • Multiple payees. Supports expenses paid by more than one person.
  • Family Sharing. Share Splid Plus with family members.
  • Group support. Create groups for trips, roommates, or events.

Limitations

  • No receipt scanning. All entry is manual — you type every amount.
  • No tip, tax, or fee support. Purely an expense tracker, not a bill splitter.
  • Dated UI. Functional but not modern.
  • No payment integrations. No Venmo, PayPal, or other payment links.
  • Sharing via link only. Recipients get a web link, not a text-based summary.

Price

Free. Splid Plus is $3.99 one-time for extra features (optional).

Frequently Asked Questions

Which bill splitting app has the best receipt scanner?

In our hands-on testing with the same real receipt, ReceiptSplit was the only app that matched the actual total. SplitIt showed nearly double the real price, Fairsplit showed nearly 4x the total, and splyt double-counted tax (showing $146.55 instead of $118.46). Splid has no scanner at all, and Splitwise locks scanning behind its $39.99/year Pro plan. If scanning accuracy matters, ReceiptSplit is the clear winner in our testing.

What's the best free bill splitting app?

It depends on what you need. Splid is completely free with no limits, but it is manual-entry only — no receipt scanning. ReceiptSplit offers 10 free AI receipt scans with all splitting features unlocked, including proportional tip and tax. Splitwise is free for basic expense tracking but locks receipt scanning and itemization behind Pro ($39.99/year), and the free tier has daily submission caps. For one-time restaurant splits with scanning, ReceiptSplit's free tier gives you the most value.

Which bill splitting apps work on Android?

Three of the six apps we compared work on Android: splyt, Splitwise, and Splid. Splitwise has the largest Android user base and also offers a web app, but receipt scanning requires Pro ($39.99/year). splyt is the only cross-platform app with receipt scanning on both iOS and Android. Splid is completely free on both platforms but has no scanning — it is manual-entry only. ReceiptSplit, SplitIt, and Fairsplit are iOS-only.

Do bill splitting apps collect my personal data?

Privacy varies widely. ReceiptSplit and Fairsplit collect no user data at all according to their App Store privacy labels — they are the safest choices. SplitIt collects contact info, phone numbers, and user IDs linked to your identity. splyt collects location data, photos, and payment info, and uses data for advertising. Splitwise collects location, contacts, and usage data. Splid collects financial info and usage data. If privacy is a concern, check the App Store privacy label before downloading.

What's the cheapest bill splitting app?

Splid is completely free with no limits. For paid apps, the cheapest options are Fairsplit at $2.99 one-time and Splid Plus at $3.99 one-time — both without recurring subscriptions. SplitIt also has a $4.99 one-time option. ReceiptSplit, splyt, and Splitwise use subscription models ($9.99/month, $4.99/month, and $4.99/month respectively), with annual discounts available. If you want a one-time purchase with receipt scanning, Fairsplit is the cheapest at $2.99, though scanning accuracy was poor in our testing.
